Digital Water Management in Pakistan: A New Era Begins

To strengthen its fight against climate change, Pakistan has launched innovative tools for digital water management in Pakistan. Developed by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), these tools aim to improve decision-making in water, agriculture, and energy sectors.

Launched at a national workshop in Islamabad, the tools are:

 New Digital Platforms Introduced:

Water Productivity Atlas

Helps monitor crop performance and water efficiency using satellite data.

Water Body Inventory of Pakistan

Offers real-time mapping of lakes, rivers, and reservoirs to manage drought and floods.

Hydro-economic Model for the Indus Basin

Simulates future water usage scenarios to guide smart investments.

Collaboration for Climate Resilience

The event was supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and attended by government officials, researchers, and climate experts.

Key Messages from Experts:

Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal, State Minister for Climate Change:

“These tools help make planning more transparent and data-driven.”

Dr. Mohsin Hafeez, IWMI Director:

“We must stop treating water, food, and energy as separate challenges.”

Ms. Anna Balance, FCDO Senior Climate Lead:

“We’re working with Pakistan to promote integrated, climate-resilient communities.”

Why It Matters

With rising climate risks and regional water stress, digital water management in Pakistan is no longer a choice—it’s a necessity.

Benefits of These Tools:

  • Improve crop productivity
  • Optimize water use in agriculture
  • Strengthen disaster and flood planning
  • Support long-term policy-making
As IWMI Director General Dr. Mark Smith put it:

“This is just the beginning. Science, government, and policy must unite.”

 Final Thoughts

The launch of these platforms marks a significant step forward. By embracing digital water management in Pakistan, the country can build a more climate-resilient, sustainable future — one decision at a time.
