In a significant move under the Gaza ceasefire agreement, Israel freed 200 Palestinian prisoners today. This marks the second batch of releases under the agreement’s first phase, which began on January 19.
Prisoners Transferred from Negev Desert Prison
The Palestinian Commission for Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs confirmed the release occurred at the Negev desert prison. Authorities transported seventy prisoners to the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing in southern Gaza. Officials prepared them for deportation beyond Palestinian territories. This transfer aligns with the terms outlined in the ceasefire deal.
Swap Deal Also Includes Israeli Soldiers
This prisoner release is part of a broader swap deal between Israel and Hamas. The agreement included four Israeli female soldiers held in Gaza since October. Hamas transferred the soldiers to the International Red Cross. Shortly after, Israel ensured their safe return home.
Netanyahu Issues Warning Over Hostage
Despite this progress, tensions persist. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Gaza residents against crossing into northern areas. He conditioned this on the status of Arbel Yehud, a 28-year-old hostage.
Hamas Confirms Hostage’s Condition
Hamas responded, confirming that Yehud is alive and in their custody. According to The Jerusalem Post, Hamas announced her release would occur next Saturday. This statement offered some hope for her safe return.
The ongoing exchange highlights the fragile nature of the ceasefire. Both sides face significant challenges, but the agreement represents a cautious step forward.
