Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister, passed away on Thursday evening at 92. AIIMS, New Delhi, confirmed the news.

“With profound grief, we announce the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, aged 92,” the release said.

Dr. Singh experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26, 2024. Resuscitation efforts began immediately. However, his condition worsened. He was admitted to AIIMS at 8:06 PM but could not be revived. He was declared dead at 9:51 PM.

The veteran politician had been battling age-related health complications. Earlier in the day, he was rushed to the hospital after his health deteriorated further.

A Legacy of Leadership

Dr. Manmohan Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. He led the nation through a transformative decade.

Before becoming Prime Minister, he was India’s Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. His reforms ushered in a new era of liberalization. Singh played a pivotal role in modernizing India’s economy.

Often called the architect of India’s economic transformation, Dr. Singh’s work extended far beyond financial policies. He also focused on foreign relations and diplomacy.

Manmohan Singh Strengthens India-UAE Relations

One of Dr. Singh’s key foreign policy achievements was strengthening India’s relations with the UAE. His efforts laid the foundation for enduring ties.

1992: As Finance Minister, Dr. Singh signed an agreement with Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum in New Delhi.

2007: As Prime Minister, he welcomed Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to New Delhi. The two leaders discussed labor rights and cooperation.

2010: Dr. Singh held discussions with Sheikh Mohammed during another visit to India. The meeting strengthened bilateral relations further.

2011: He met Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan in New Delhi. These meetings expanded cooperation between the two nations.

Dr. Singh praised the UAE’s hospitable environment and its labor laws, benefiting millions of Indian workers. He believed in fostering global partnerships.
