Latest warning issued over fake online payment scams in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Police General Command has sounded the alarm on fraudulent online transactions, cautioning the public to be vigilant when selling vehicles and goods online.

Scammers are using counterfeit payment receipts to swindle unsuspecting sellers, taking possession of items without making genuine payments.

Brigadier General Muslim Mohammed Al Ameri, Acting Director of the Criminal Security Sector, emphasized the police’s commitment to educating the public and preventing such scams. “We want to empower the community to recognize these fraudulent activities and report them to us promptly,” he said.

Here’s how the scam typically works: a seller advertises their item on social media or specialized apps, and after agreeing on terms, the fraudster sends fake bank receipts, convincing the seller that the payment will take a few days to process. The fraudster then takes possession of the item, leaving the seller with no payment and no goods.

Al Ameri stressed the importance of verifying actual payment receipt before handing over the item. “Don’t fall prey to these cunning fraudsters who assure you of legal transactions,” he warned.

If you encounter fraud, contact the authorities immediately. Report to the nearest police station or share information through the Abu Dhabi Police’s “Aman” service, available 24/7. You can reach Aman via the toll-free number 8002626 (AMAN2626), text messages (2828), email (aman@adpolice.gov.ae), or the Abu Dhabi Police smart app.
