How to apply for a health card in the UAE: A step-by-step guide

Residing in the UAE can be challenging, both in terms of work and personal life, emphasizing the importance of having dependable healthcare services available.

It is advisable to obtain a health card from Emirates Health Services (EHS) even if you already have insurance from your employer.

This card offers cost-effective healthcare at public hospitals and provides additional security for your medical requirements.

The health card, which is not only used by UAE residents and citizens to receive medical services at lower prices, also has special advantages for People of Determination (PoD). For example, PoD card holders have free use of all EHS services, and regular card holders get 20% off medical services.

Who Can Apply for a Health Card?

The health card is available to any UAE citizen, GCC national, or resident of the UAE.

Documents Required

1. For People of Determination (PoD)

  • Or a medical report dated within the last 3 months from a government building.
  • Passport
  • Emirates ID

2. For UAE Residents

  • Emirates ID

3. For UAE Citizens

  • Emirates ID
  • A copy of the Family Book (Khulasat Al Qaid)

Validity Period of the Health Card

UAE and GCC Nationals: Valid for 5 years.

UAE Residents: Valid for 1 year.

Application Fees

People of Determination (PoD): Dh50

UAE Citizens: Dh50

Expats: 100 dh for the health card and 15 dh for the EHS application form.

How to Apply for a Health Card

It is very simple to fill out the form for your health card on the internet and here’s how you do it:

  1. Visit the EHS website (ehs.gov.ae) and click on ‘Patient Services.’.
  2. Select ‘Issue of a Health Card’ and click ‘Start Now.’.
  3. And UAE Pass, and accept the verification on your mobile phone.
  4. Select your medical type according to your nationality (UAE national, resident, GCC national).
  5. Click ‘Apply’ and select whether you’re applying for yourself or on behalf of someone else.
  6. Click on new for the type of application and input your emirates id number.
  7. Fill out the appropriate medical centre form.
  8. Proceed to the payment page. You will get a SMS verification after you finish paying.
  9. Once approved, your health card will be automatically linked to your Emirates ID.

Or you can submit through the EHS mobile app by doing almost the same thing. Simply because all you have to do is sign in using your uae pass and the app tells you exactly what to do.

Processing Time

So as soon as your payment clears your health card is activated and connected to your emirates id. For People of Determination (PoD), this process may take between 7 and 30 days.

Where Can You Use the Health Card?

The health card can only be used at EHS-managed facilities such as Dubai Public Health Centre, Alriffa Health Centre in Sharjah, and Masafi Hospital in Fujairah. To locate EHS facilities in your area, go to the EHS website and go to the ‘Health Care Facilities’ section within ‘Services’.
