Renowned ballerina Michaela DePrince passes away at 29

29-year-old Michaela DePrince, who was orphaned during Sierra Leone’s civil war, moved to the United States and overcame obstacles to achieve success as a ballerina.

The announcement of her death was made on her social media profiles on Friday.

DePrince, who holds the position of second soloist at the Boston Ballet, was commended for her accomplished professional journey with the Dutch National Ballet and the Dance Theatre of Harlem.

The Dance Theatre of Harlem confirmed on X that DePrince was a supporter of children impacted by conflict and violence, and also a humanitarian and activist.

She acted as an Ambassador for War Child Holland and organized her charity event, Dare to Dream, which focused on supporting the health and mental well-being of children in war-torn areas.

DePrince was left behind by her uncle during the harsh civil war in West Africa and experienced neglect in an orphanage while dealing with the skin condition Vitiligo.

DePrince’s journey was turned into a film called “First Position.”

She was also featured in “Lemonade,” a project by Beyonce in 2016 that explores the stories of African American women.
