Archer Aviation, a US-based company specializing in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has delivered its first Midnight aircraft to the US Air Force for evaluation.
This marks a significant milestone as the company prepares to launch air taxi services in the UAE, where it has entered into a multi-million-dollar partnership with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office.
Earlier this year, Archer signed a landmark deal with Abu Dhabi to manufacture air taxis and set up its international headquarters in the UAE capital. The company aims to revolutionize urban transportation in the region by drastically reducing travel times.
For instance, a journey between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which typically takes 60 to 90 minutes by car, could be shortened to just 10 to 20 minutes using the Midnight aircraft. The cost for such a ride is expected to be between AED 800 and AED 1,500, while intra-city trips within an emirate could cost around AED 350.
Nikhil Goel, Chief Commercial Officer of Archer Aviation, announced in May that passengers in the UAE could be flying on Archer’s aircraft within the next 18 to 24 months.
This development aligns with Archer’s broader vision to pioneer a new mode of air transport that is safer, more cost-effective, and quieter than traditional internal combustion engine aircraft.
The US Department of Defence has already accepted the Midnight aircraft’s military airworthiness assessment, a critical step that allows for flight testing and evaluation for military applications.
This approval paves the way for government-directed testing by the US Air Force, which will assess the aircraft’s suitability for various operational and military-specific missions.
Archer’s Midnight aircraft, with its unique vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, proprietary electric powertrain, and low noise profile, is seen as a game-changer in both commercial and military aviation.
It promises to enhance rapid response, agility, and operational effectiveness across a wide range of mission profiles.
“This delivery is a pivotal moment for Archer and the future of military aviation,” said Adam Goldstein, CEO of Archer Aviation. “Our goal is to prove Midnight’s potential and ensure the United States continues to lead the way in advanced technology.”
Col. Elliott Leigh, Chief Commercialisation Officer for the US Air Force, also expressed optimism about the partnership. “Archer’s Midnight aircraft has the potential to significantly enhance our operational capabilities. We are eager to explore how this advanced aircraft can contribute to our mission,” he said.
As Archer Aviation continues to develop its Midnight aircraft, the company is set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of air mobility, both in the UAE and globally.
