Abu Dhabi Airports, in partnership with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP), has unveiled the world’s first biometric Smart Travel project at Zayed International Airport. This pioneering initiative aims to enhance aviation security and streamline the travel experience using advanced AI-driven technology.
In collaboration with Next 50, a company specializing in AI transportation solutions, the project will roll out in three phases to integrate biometric authentication systems across all security and operational touchpoints at the airport. Utilizing ICP databases, the system will automatically authenticate travelers’ biometrics without the need for prior registration.
Enhanced Security and Efficiency
The new biometric system, implemented during the launch of Zayed International Airport’s new terminal in November 2023, covers multiple touchpoints including automated traveler registration, self-service baggage delivery, and facial recognition at e-gates and boarding gates. This eliminates the need for travel documents or direct interaction with airport staff, significantly speeding up the travel process.
Andrew Murphy, Chief Information Officer at Zayed International Airport, emphasized the project’s impact: “We are committed to enhancing the traveler experience through efficient and seamless services. By 2025, we aim to expand these systems across all touchpoints and other airlines, ensuring best-in-class passenger services and prioritizing traveler security and safety.”
Future Expansion
The next phase involves introducing biometric systems for five additional airlines at check-in and all boarding gates, as well as installing new e-gates in transit areas for faster, more secure processing. The expansion will also cover the Etihad Airways lounge and duty-free retail outlets.
Saeed Saif Al Khaili, General Director at ICP, highlighted the project’s efficiency: “The Biometric Smart Travel project reduces traveler service time from 25 seconds to just seven seconds, integrating ticket and document verification into a single process. This not only enhances security but also alleviates the burden on human resources by utilizing smart gates for identity verification.”
Global Travel Experience
The Biometric Smart Travel project promises numerous benefits, including enhanced airline performance by reducing the need for costly infrastructure expansions and effectively detecting identification fraud and forgery. This initiative places Abu Dhabi Airports at the forefront of innovative passenger services, setting a new standard for global travel.
