UAE announces Islamic new year holiday for private sector

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has declared Sunday, July 7th, a paid holiday to celebrate the Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year.

This marks the beginning of Muharram 1, the first month of the new Islamic calendar year 1446 AH. The UAE joins other countries like Oman in offering a day off for both public and private sector employees on this occasion.

For those working on a five-day workweek, this translates to a delightful long weekend!

Other countries, including Oman, have also declared July 7 as a holiday for both public and private sector employees, giving many a long weekend. In Oman, government employees and private sector companies operating on a five-day workweek will benefit from this extended break.

UAE residents still have a few holidays left to look forward to before the end of the year. This includes a holiday on the occasion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s birthday and a long weekend to celebrate National Day, which is the last official holiday of the year. These holidays are part of the 2024 list announced by the UAE Cabinet. Additionally, employees in the UAE are entitled to 30 annual leave days each year.
