Expats fuel Pakistan’s economy with historic remittances

Eid al-Adha is set to be even more celebratory for many Pakistani families this year, thanks to a surge in remittances from overseas Pakistanis.

In a historic feat, they sent a staggering $3.24 billion home in May 2024, marking a whopping 54% increase compared to May 2023, according to the State Bank of Pakistan.

This incredible display of generosity comes as a welcome relief during a crucial time. The additional funds will undoubtedly boost the Pakistani economy and empower countless families to celebrate Eid al-Adha with greater joy.

The dedication of Pakistanis living abroad is truly commendable. Over the past 11 months of the current financial year, they’ve remitted a total of $27.1 billion, showcasing unwavering support for their loved ones back home.

Breaking down the figures, the State Bank reveals that Pakistanis residing in Saudi Arabia emerged as the top contributors, sending a significant $82 million in May. Following closely behind were Pakistanis in the United Arab Emirates, who repatriated a substantial $67 million during the same period.
