Dhul Hijjah crescent spotted, Eid Al Adha dates announced

On Friday, June 7, the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah 1445 was photographed from Abu Dhabi. The UAE’s Astronomy Centre shared a captivating image of the faint crescent captured by the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory at 10am UAE time (6am GMT), through a social media post.

Residents of the UAE are set to enjoy a public holiday for Arafah Day, followed by three days off for Eid Al Adha, as per the government’s official holiday schedule.

Islamic countries determine the start of Dhul Hijjah and the celebration of Eid Al Adha through local moon sightings. The crescent moon, signaling the start of Dhul Hijjah, was observed in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, June 6. Following this sighting, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia announced, “Friday is the beginning of the month of Dhul Hijjah, and the standing at Arafat will be on Saturday, June 15, 2024.”

In contrast, Oman did not sight the crescent moon on Thursday evening, leading to the decision that Monday, June 17, will mark the first day of Eid Al Adha in the country.

Eid Al Adha, known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims around the world with special prayers and the ritual slaughter of livestock — typically a goat, sheep, cow, or camel. This act commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s test of faith and his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command. Before the sacrifice was carried out, Allah provided a ram for Ibrahim to slaughter instead, symbolizing divine mercy and provision.

The festival not only honors Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion but also emphasizes the values of sacrifice, charity, and community. Families gather to share festive meals and distribute portions of the sacrificed meat to the needy, reflecting the spirit of giving and compassion that defines this significant Islamic holiday.
