Sharjah Traffic Diversions 2026 are helping keep vehicles moving smoothly as major infrastructure projects continue across the emirate. The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has introduced several alternative routes to reduce congestion and maintain road safety.
The latest traffic plans cover key areas affected by road development, Al Taawun Tunnel works, Etihad Rail preparations and intersection upgrades. SRTA said the diversions were designed after studying traffic movement and identifying routes that could handle additional vehicles.
Al Khan Road Diversions
Al Khan Road is among the key areas affected by temporary diversions. The road is an important route in Sharjah and carries heavy traffic every day.
The diversions aim to increase road capacity and improve traffic movement as the emirate continues to grow. Work on the first diversion began on May 22, 2026.
The work included extending the road next to Industrial Areas 7, 8 and 9. Another diversion towards Industrial Road began on June 3, 2026. SRTA said the changes helped improve traffic flow in the area.
Al Taawun Tunnel Project
The Al Taawun Tunnel project is one of Sharjah’s major infrastructure developments. It aims to improve the connection between Sharjah and Dubai and enhance traffic movement on one of the emirate’s busiest routes.
SRTA partially closed Al Taawun Square from June 13, 2026, as part of the project. Vehicles heading towards Dubai and Al Nahda Bridge were diverted through Corniche Street.
Traffic coming from Al Nahda Bridge was directed towards the new Al Taawun Street. The alternative routes were introduced to keep traffic moving during construction.
Etihad Rail Traffic Diversion
Sharjah is also preparing its road network for the Etihad Rail project. SRTA introduced a traffic diversion between University City and the Institutes Land areas.
The diversion is scheduled to continue from July 4 until August 23, 2026. Alternative routes are available for vehicles travelling from Industrial Areas 17 and 18 and Dubai.
The plan is intended to improve road readiness and support the development of the strategic rail project.
Al Khulafa Intersection Upgrade
Another major change is taking place at Al Khulafa Al Rashideen Intersection. SRTA introduced a partial and temporary diversion on June 13, 2026.
The project aims to improve the intersection and increase traffic efficiency on nearby roads. The diversion affects parts of roads connected to Al Wahda Street and Jamal Abdul Nasser Street.
Routes towards Al Khan, Al Taawun and Industrial Area 1 are also affected. Alternative roads have been provided to help maintain traffic movement during construction.
Developing Two Major Squares
SRTA has also introduced a temporary diversion at Omran Bin Taryam and Ahmed Bin Hadid squares.
The project will transform the two squares into intersections controlled by permanent traffic lights. Work on the diversion started on June 21, 2026.
Traffic continues along Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalid Al Qasimi Street without closure, helping maintain movement while construction continues.
Industrial Areas 12 and 13
A further diversion between Industrial Areas 12 and 13 began on June 30, 2026. Work is scheduled to continue until August 30, 2026.
SRTA has provided alternative routes to help vehicles continue moving through the area.
