Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88. His life was marked by humility, compassion, and service to the Church. He spent decades championing the poor and spreading the Gospel with courage and sincerity.
The announcement of his death came at 9:45 AM from Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, at Casa Santa Marta. “With deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” said Cardinal Farrell. He added, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome returned to the house of the Father.” His passing was peaceful and filled with spiritual dignity.
Pope Francis had been battling health issues in recent months. Pope Francis checked into the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on February 14, 2025, after battling bronchitis for several days. His condition worsened steadily, and by February 18, doctors had diagnosed him with bilateral pneumonia. After 38 days of hospitalization, he returned to his Vatican residence at Casa Santa Marta to continue recovery. Unfortunately, his condition declined further.
Pope Francis facing respiratory issue
The Pope had faced respiratory problems for most of his life. For instance, in 1957, at age 21, he underwent lung surgery in Argentina due to a severe infection. Over the years, his respiratory health remained fragile. As he grew older, he continued to suffer from frequent respiratory illnesses. In fact, in November 2023, he canceled a planned visit to the United Arab Emirates due to influenza and lung inflammation.
Despite health setbacks, Pope Francis remained active in his responsibilities. In April 2024, he approved a revised edition of the liturgical book for papal funerals. The new Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis introduced several changes to the traditional funeral process. One notable update is that the confirmation of death now takes place in the chapel. Immediately after, the body is placed in the coffin to reflect simplicity and reverence.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, revealed that Pope Francis had requested a simple and faith-centered funeral. He explained, “The renewed rite emphasizes that the funeral honors a pastor and disciple of Christ, not a worldly figure.”
Details about the funeral Mass have not yet been announced. However, preparations are underway at the Vatican. The global Catholic community now mourns a spiritual leader whose papacy reflected love, humility, and unshakable devotion to Christ.
