OpenAI is building its first big AI datacenter outside the US — in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This new facility is called the Stargate UAE AI Datacenter. It will start working with 200 megawatts of AI power by 2026 and plans to grow to 1 gigawatt later. This means one of the world’s largest AI hubs will soon be right in the heart of the Middle East.
Top tech companies like Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco, and SoftBank are working with OpenAI on this project. OpenAI also thanked President Trump for lifting some chip export rules, making this possible.
OpenAI says this datacenter could serve half of the world’s population within a 3,200 km radius. However, when The Register asked ChatGPT to show this on a map, it mistakenly centered the area around Greece — a funny example of AI’s limits today.
Even so, this project is important. The UAE will be the first country to get full nationwide access to ChatGPT through this datacenter. It’s part of OpenAI’s plan to build AI centers in ten countries, called the “OpenAI for Countries” program.
Why the Stargate UAE AI Datacenter is Important:
-
Located in a rich and tech-friendly region
-
Supported by big technology companies
-
Starts with 200MW, plans to grow to 1GW
-
Will give the UAE full access to ChatGPT
-
Can reach billions of people within 3,200 km
-
Marks a major step in making AI accessible worldwide
This datacenter puts the UAE on the map as a key player in AI technology. It shows how AI is quickly spreading beyond the US, connecting more people and powering new innovations every day.
