Egyptian delegation travels to Qatar for Gaza ceasefire talks

Gaza Ceasefire

An Egyptian security delegation has arrived in Qatar to discuss a potential ceasefire in Gaza, according to Al Qahera News TV. The talks will focus on securing hostage releases, increasing humanitarian aid, and advancing toward the next phase of the truce.

Egypt Proposes New Ceasefire Plan

On Monday, Egypt introduced a new proposal aimed at reviving the ceasefire agreement, security sources told Reuters. The proposal comes after a surge in violence following Israel’s air and ground attacks on Hamas militants on March 18. This escalation ended a two-month period of relative calm.

Key Points of Egypt’s Ceasefire Proposal

Under the Egyptian plan, Hamas would release five Israeli hostages each week. In exchange, Israel would begin the second phase of the ceasefire after the first week, according to two security sources. This phased approach is designed to build confidence between both sides.

Ongoing Tensions Between Israel and Hamas

Both Israel and Hamas continue to accuse each other of violating the previous truce. The ceasefire, which had mostly held since January, provided temporary relief for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. However, renewed attacks have caused further destruction in the already devastated enclave.

Hamas, which still holds 59 of the more than 250 hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attack, blames Israel for undermining mediation efforts. The group insists that Israel’s military actions are delaying progress toward a long-term agreement.

Israel’s Position on Ceasefire Extensions

Israel has signaled a willingness to extend the ceasefire temporarily if Hamas releases additional hostages. However, officials have clarified that discussions about a permanent truce will not begin immediately. Instead, they prefer a step-by-step approach before making long-term commitments.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

With tensions escalating, Egypt’s latest initiative seeks to break the deadlock and move closer to a lasting resolution. International mediators are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for progress in the ongoing negotiations.
