Heathrow Airport shuts down; Emirates, Etihad cancel Flights

Heathrow Airport

UAE airlines Emirates and Etihad have canceled several flights to and from London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) after its sudden closure.

The UK’s busiest airport announced it will remain shut until midnight on March 21. A fire at an electrical substation caused a major power failure. Officials confirmed the shutdown is necessary for passenger and staff safety.

Etihad Airways: Canceled and Diverted Flights

Etihad Airways has canceled the following flights:

– EY63 (Abu Dhabi to Heathrow)

– EY64 (Heathrow to Abu Dhabi)

– EY65 (Abu Dhabi to Heathrow)

– EY66 (Heathrow to Abu Dhabi)

However, flight EY61 from Abu Dhabi to London will land in Frankfurt instead. The airline is closely monitoring the situation.

Emirates: Flight Cancellations

Emirates has also suspended several flights scheduled for Friday. The following flights are affected:

– EK001/002, EK029/030, and EK031/032 (Dubai-Heathrow-Dubai)

– EK008 (Heathrow to Dubai)

– EK003/004 and EK005/006

The airline advised passengers to check for updates before traveling. “Customers on canceled flights will not be accepted for travel,” Emirates stated.

Passengers Advised to Avoid Heathrow

Authorities have warned travelers to expect severe disruptions in the coming days. Officials urged passengers not to visit the airport until further notice.

Heathrow is the UK’s largest and busiest international airport. In 2024, it ranked as the world’s second-busiest international airport after Dubai, according to OAG.

Meanwhile, London Fire Brigade crews responded to the fire in Hayes, West London. Officials evacuated around 150 people as a precaution.
