WFP warns of rising food insecurity in Gaza, West Bank

gaza

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has raised alarms over worsening food security in Gaza and the West Bank. Earlier improvements in Gaza are now at serious risk, while concerns in the West Bank continue to escalate.

Significant Food Assistance Delivered During Ceasefire

In a report released on Friday, WFP highlighted its efforts during the 42-day ceasefire, which started on January 19. More than 40,000 metric tonnes of food reached Gaza, providing lifesaving aid to 1.3 million people. Additionally, electronic cash assistance worth $6.8 million supported 135,000 individuals, helping families buy essential supplies.

Since March 2, food transportation into Gaza has completely stopped due to border crossing closures. These restrictions affect both humanitarian and commercial supplies. Currently, WFP has enough food stocks to sustain active kitchens and bakeries for one month. Ready-to-eat food parcels can assist 550,000 people for the next two weeks.

Blocked Aid and Food Stockpile Awaiting Approval

Around 63,000 metric tonnes of food, intended for Gaza, remain stored or in transit across the region. These supplies could sustain 1.1 million people for up to three months. However, without immediate approval, they cannot be delivered. WFP continues to push for urgent access.

Food insecurity in the West Bank is worsening due to increasing military activity, displacement, and movement restrictions. These disruptions are straining local markets and limiting food accessibility. Over the past year, economic conditions have declined sharply, pushing prices higher. With rising unemployment, even basic food items have become unaffordable for many families.

Urgent Funding Needed to Prevent Crisis

WFP urgently needs $265 million to sustain operations for the next six months. This funding will help 1.4 million people facing severe food shortages in Gaza and the West Bank. Without immediate financial support and access approvals, the crisis could escalate further.
