Premier League: Salah shines as Liverpool extend lead at the top

Liverpool fought back to secure a 3-1 win over Southampton, with Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez leading the charge. This victory pushed the Premier League leaders 16 points clear on Saturday.

Arne Slot’s team faced an early setback when Will Smallbone gave Southampton a surprise lead in the first half. However, Liverpool quickly regained control after halftime. Nunez, often criticized for inconsistency, scored the equalizer and later won the penalty that Salah converted. Moments later, Salah scored another penalty, increasing his season tally to 32 goals.

With this win, Liverpool moved closer to their record-equalling 20th English league title and first since 2020. Second-placed Arsenal still have two games in hand, including a crucial match against Manchester United on Sunday. However, Liverpool’s dominance suggests their title charge remains unstoppable, regardless of Arsenal’s results.

Slot, in his debut season after replacing Jurgen Klopp, is guiding Liverpool toward a potential treble. The Reds will now turn their attention to the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. They hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

After that, Liverpool will head to Wembley on March 16 for the League Cup final against Newcastle. They aim to win their first trophy under Slot. With only one league defeat this season, they will have nine matches left to seal the title.

Meanwhile, Southampton remain in deep trouble. Sitting 13 points from safety, they risk recording one of the lowest-ever points totals in Premier League history.

Due to fixture scheduling, this was Liverpool’s only league match in March. Curtis Jones came close to scoring within seconds, narrowly missing the target. Liverpool, who struggled for attempts against PSG, quickly matched that shot count within minutes at Anfield.
