Netflix announces ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Premiere

Squid Game

Netflix has revealed that Squid Game will return for its third and final season on June 27. The announcement was made during the ‘Next on Netflix’ event on Thursday. A short teaser was also shared, giving fans a glimpse of the upcoming season.

The survival thriller became a global sensation in 2021. It boosted Netflix’s subscriber numbers and set new records. In fact, it became Netflix’s most-watched original series during its first month. Squid Game attracted 142 million households, all captivated by its deadly competition to erase financial debt.

The success of Squid Game, along with live events like the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match and NFL games, contributed to Netflix’s record growth. In the fourth quarter, the platform gained 19 million subscribers, bringing its global subscriber base to nearly 302 million.

The third season will conclude the series, which was created by writer and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk. Lee Jung-jae will reprise his role as Seong Gi-hun, determined to stop the deadly games once and for all.

Squid Game History

Squid Game is just one of the many anticipated returns to Netflix this year. Stranger Things will debut its fifth and final season, while Wednesday, inspired by the Addams Family, will return for its second season.

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer mentioned that they shot over 650 hours of footage for the final season. Despite this, they hinted at more stories to be told.

“We can’t just be one thing,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria. “We need to be the best version of everything.” With over 700 million viewers, Netflix aims to reach all audiences.

The showcase also revealed footage of Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film Frankenstein, which reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic. Del Toro expressed, “This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for fifty years.”

Ben Affleck introduced RIP, a crime thriller based on true events. He stars alongside Matt Damon in this Florida-based film.

Stand-up comedian John Mulaney will also return to Netflix on March 12. His live late-night show, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney, will run for 12 weeks. Mulaney humorously stated, “We will be live globally with no delay. We will never be relevant.”

Lastly, 30 Rock creator Tina Fey will adapt Alan Alda’s 1981 romantic comedy The Four Seasons into an eight-episode series. Fey will star alongside Steve Carell, Will Forte, Kerri Kinney-Silver, Colman Domingo, and Marco Calvani.
