Mpox

Pakistan has confirmed its first Mpox (Monkeypox) case of 2025, according to ARY News. Routine screening at Peshawar Airport detected the case on January 24. A Ministry of Health spokesperson stated that the patient is now receiving treatment at Services Hospital in Peshawar.

This latest case brings the total number of Mpox cases in Pakistan to 10 since the health emergency was declared. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health reassures the public that strict measures are being taken to prevent further infections.

Monkeypox virus causes Mpox viral disease. It primarily spreads through close contact with infected people, animals, or contaminated materials. Symptoms usually begin with fever, followed by the appearance of a rash within one to three days.

The rash often starts on the face before spreading to other parts of the body, including the hands and feet. It progresses through distinct stages, such as macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, and eventually scabs. Additionally, patients may experience fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, and headaches.

The disease typically lasts two to four weeks, but the incubation period varies. It can range from seven to 14 days, though in some cases, it may extend to 21 days. While Mpox can be mild, it can also cause complications in certain individuals.

Ministry of Health caution against MPox

To address the situation, the Ministry of Health has advised the public to remain vigilant. Officials recommend frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of Mpox. Travelers arriving from regions with reported cases are encouraged to report symptoms immediately.

Globally, Mpox has emerged as a significant health concern in recent years. Although Pakistan has reported only a few cases, authorities remain committed to controlling its spread. Ongoing efforts include active screening, early detection, and timely medical care.

In light of the first Mpox case in 2025, the government is increasing public awareness. Officials are working tirelessly to implement disease control strategies and protect citizens from further outbreaks.
