The UAE has announced the precautionary withdrawal of pepperoni beef from supermarkets due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) confirmed this action on Saturday, emphasizing its commitment to food safety.
The withdrawal follows ongoing investigations aimed at protecting public health. Additionally, the MoCCAE is collaborating with local regulatory authorities and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority. While the producing company remains unidentified, the ministry assured that the pepperoni beef would not return to shelves until lab tests are complete. Furthermore, the details of the incident are being thoroughly verified.
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria in question, poses significant health risks. It can cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness that is especially dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The bacteria, notably, can spread during food processing, preparation, or packaging. Consequently, stringent precautions are essential.
To address this issue, the MoCCAE emphasized its reliance on the Gulf Rapid Alert System for Food (GRASF). This system facilitates the quick exchange of information about contaminated food products across GCC countries. Moreover, GRASF manages food risk alerts, coordinates bans, and helps lift restrictions when necessary.
Dr. Mohammed Salman Al Hamadi, Assistant Undersecretary for Food Diversity at MoCCAE, reassured the public about the rigorous measures being implemented. “We are working closely with relevant authorities to ensure all food products meet the highest safety standards,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the ministry is intensifying its efforts to ensure consumer safety. Laboratory and field teams are actively collecting additional samples for testing. At the same time, the product is being promptly removed from all markets across the UAE. These actions reflect the ministry’s proactive approach to safeguarding public health.
