Sharjah National Oil Corporation breaks ground on Emirate’s largest solar power plant

The Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC), the oil and gas executive arm of Sharjah in the UAE, has announced the commencement of construction on the emirate’s largest solar power plant.

This significant project features a 60MWp ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) plant situated at SNOC’s Sajaa Gas Complex. Developed and operated by Emerge—a joint venture between Masdar and the EDF Group—the plant will function under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) agreement for 25 years, according to SNOC’s press release.

Once operational, the plant is expected to offset 66,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, which is comparable to removing over 14,600 cars from the roads each year.

SNOC’s Chief Executive Officer, Hatem Al Mosa, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “SNOC is proud to witness this milestone on its journey to achieving Net-Zero by 2032. This project aligns with Sharjah’s sustainability goals and our commitment to environmental protection.”

Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge, added, “Our turnkey solutions enable businesses like SNOC to transition towards a sustainable future without upfront costs. This project will help SNOC meet its decarbonization targets and provide a more cost-effective energy solution for the Emirate. We look forward to its successful completion.”
