The veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik formally retired from all forms of cricket in a heartfelt announcement on his Facebook page, which concluded an extraordinary career that lasted for over two decades.

This decision has come after a lot of thought and Karthik expresses gratitude to his coaches, teammates and support staff who have made this journey so memorable.

After losing to the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League Eliminator, Karthik’s emotional farewell to his IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, was foretold.

Ten days later, his retirement was confirmed and he acknowledged the new challenges ahead of him off the field.

Karthik’s numbers may not be staggering, with 26 Tests, 94 ODIs, and 60 T20s under his belt, but his constant presence and adaptability have been remarkable throughout his career. The 38 year old was still relevant until the very end, despite more transition to the commentary box in recent years.

Karthik’s bid to make it back into the T20 World Cup squad has ignited a debate, demonstrating his resilience and skill. But the selectors have chosen young talent, which signals the end of an era for a veteran cricketer.

He’s a legend of the Indian Premier League, with 4,842 runs in 257 matches and second on the alltime run scorers list behind Rohit Sharma. Karthik wore the colours of six teams during his 17 years in the Indian Premier League, which has been an indelible mark on the league since it was launched in 2008. Karthik’s season ended with 326 runs in 15 matches, showing his enduring abilities at an average of 36.22 and a remarkable strike rate of 187.36.

As he embarks on a new chapter post-retirement, Karthik’s contributions to Indian cricket and the IPL will be remembered fondly, marking the end of an era for one of the game’s stalwarts.
