Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of Sharjah Art Foundation, has been awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. His Excellency Nicolas Niemtchinow, Ambassador of France to the UAE, presented this honour during a special ceremony at The Flying Saucer in Sharjah.
The Order of Arts and Letters, established in 1957, celebrates individuals who contribute significantly to the arts and literature. It also honours efforts that promote culture, both within France and globally. This recognition highlights Hoor Al Qasimi’s longstanding dedication to fostering creative exchange across borders.
Speaking at the event, Al Qasimi said, “It is a tremendous honour to receive this award. It reflects years of cultural collaboration, both in Sharjah and around the world. I share this recognition with everyone who has supported and inspired me throughout my journey.”
The ceremony was attended by several French dignitaries. These included Jean-Christophe Paris, Consul General of France in Dubai; Stéphanie Salha, Cultural Advisor and Director of Institut Français in the UAE; and Marie Lozon de Cantelmi, Cultural Attaché at the French Embassy.
Ambassador Niemtchinow praised Al Qasimi’s leadership in strengthening cultural ties. He emphasized her role in showcasing French and Francophone artists, particularly through the Sharjah Biennial. He also acknowledged her contributions to the Alliance Française of Sharjah and her commitment to Franco-Emirati friendship.
The event welcomed many distinguished Emirati guests. Among the guests was His Excellency Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Government Relations Department. Her Excellency Sheikha Nawar Al Qassimi, Vice President of Sharjah Art Foundation, also attended the ceremony.
Her Excellency Sheikha Noora Al Mualla, Director of Learning and Research, was present as well.
Also in attendance was Her Excellency Sheikha Rad Alqasimi, Secretary General of the International French Association in Sharjah. Audrey Leseigneur, Director of Alliance Française Sharjah, joined the event. Mona El-Mousfy, Advisor to the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, was also among the distinguished attendees.
In addition to leading Sharjah Art Foundation, Hoor Al Qasimi holds several other prominent roles. She is President of the International Biennial Association and The Africa Institute in Sharjah. She also directs the Sharjah Architecture Triennial and heads Sharjah’s Global Studies University and the Sharjah Creative Quarter.
Looking ahead, Al Qasimi will serve as Artistic Director of the 6th Aichi Triennale in 2025 and the 25th Biennale of Sydney in 2026. This prestigious French honour reinforces her impact as a global cultural leader and her continued commitment to artistic exchange and international dialogue.
