The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has introduced a new symbol for the UAE dirham, further strengthening the country’s position as a global financial hub. This updated design reflects the stability of the Emirati currency while also paying tribute to the UAE national flag.
New Dirham Symbol Enhances Financial Identity
The CBUAE’s dirham symbol was designed to create an internationally recognizable representation of the national currency. It features two horizontal lines, symbolizing the dirham’s stability, and takes inspiration from the UAE flag.
In addition, the CBUAE also unveiled the symbol for the digital dirham. This version includes a circular design surrounding the physical currency symbol, incorporating the colors of the UAE flag. As a result, it reflects pride, national identity, and financial stability.
Digital Dirham Set for Retail Launch
The digital dirham’s rollout is expected in the last quarter of the year for the retail sector. It will be available through licensed financial institutions, including banks, exchange houses, finance companies, and FinTech firms. Consequently, businesses and individuals will have seamless access to this new digital currency.
Global Shift Towards Digital Currencies
Across the world, central banks are rapidly developing digital currencies as cryptocurrency adoption continues to grow. More retail and institutional investors are exploring digital assets, increasing the demand for regulated digital currencies. Therefore, the UAE’s introduction of the digital dirham aligns with these evolving financial trends.
CBUAE Governor Highlights Key Milestone
Khaled Mohamed Balama, governor of the CBUAE, emphasized the importance of this financial step.
“We are proud to unveil today the new symbol for the UAE’s national currency, the ‘dirham,’ in both its physical and digital forms, along with the design of the digital dirham wallet,” he said.
Furthermore, he noted that this initiative represents a major advancement in the Digital Dirham programme, bringing the UAE closer to its vision for modern financial innovation.
With the new symbol and digital currency initiative, the UAE is reinforcing its financial leadership while embracing the future of digital finance.
