Bengaluru Crushes Kolkata to Begin IPL Campaign

IPL

Royal Challengers Bengaluru started their IPL journey with a dominant seven-wicket victory over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders.

Chasing 175, Bengaluru reached the target in just 16.2 overs. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 59, while Phil Salt smashed 56. Their 95-run opening stand set the foundation. Rajat Patidar added 34, keeping the momentum alive. Liam Livingstone finished the chase with an unbeaten 15.

After the win, Salt highlighted his partnership with Kohli as a key factor.

“We haven’t batted together much,” Salt said. “But building that stand in the first game was crucial.”

Earlier, in IPL Bengaluru’s decision to bowl first proved effective. Josh Hazlewood struck in the first over, dismissing Quinton de Kock. Despite early jitters, Kolkata responded aggressively with boundaries at Eden Gardens.

Ajinkya Rahane, the new Kolkata captain, led the charge. His 31-ball 56 provided early momentum. Sunil Narine’s quickfire 44 strengthened their position. However, both fell in quick succession, shifting the game’s momentum.

Krunal Pandya’s crucial spell (3-29) tightened Bengaluru’s grip. Kolkata struggled and finished at a below-par 174-8. Youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi chipped in with 30 at the end.

Rahane admitted the team’s mistakes and emphasized improvement.

“We have the batting depth,” he said. “But losing key wickets hurt us. We aimed for 210-220, but fell short.”

With this win, Bengaluru gains early confidence. Meanwhile, Kolkata must regroup before their next match.
