Bodour Al Qasimi honors AUS team’s creative adaptation

Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the American University of Sharjah (AUS), honored a talented team of students, alumni, and faculty. Additionally, the team performed an innovative theatrical adaptation of The Pawned Dagger. Moreover, the production transformed a celebrated literary work by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi into a vibrant live performance. Furthermore, the award ceremony celebrated the team’s passion for storytelling and their commitment to cultural heritage.

On January 29, 2025, audiences at Al Hisn Fort in downtown Sharjah witnessed a dynamic performance. Subsequently, the performance united historical tradition with modern creativity. Also, the event formed a key part of the Sharjah Public Library’s 100-year anniversary. Consequently, it reinforced the power of literature and live theater in cultural education.

During the ceremony, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi expressed her admiration. Then, she stated, “Our students and faculty showcased exceptional creativity, dedication, and hard work.” Furthermore, she celebrated their achievements by presenting a commemorative silver coin. Moreover, this token marked the centenary of Sharjah’s first library. Additionally, it honored their role in preserving knowledge and creativity.

Visiting Professor Abishek Nair directed the adaptation. In addition, he led the team in reimagining a key chapter of The Pawned Dagger. Therefore, literature connected with history. Also, students from the AUS Performing Arts Programme contributed. Similarly, peers from other disciplines and the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy collaborated to bring the production to life.

The team invested months in preparation. Initially, rehearsals began in October 2024. Then, they refined stage direction and adjusted acoustics. Moreover, they addressed movement challenges in a historical venue. Consequently, the performance was seamless. Additionally, Dean Dr. Mahmoud Anabtawi praised the team’s work. He remarked that the celebration reflected storytelling’s enduring power. Similarly, the performance deepened our understanding of history, culture, and identity.

Traditional Arabic music enriched the production. Also, live music elevated the dramatic narrative. Therefore, the production became a vivid cultural experience. Furthermore, Dr. Albert Agha highlighted theater’s role. Subsequently, he noted that theater gives students a unique way to experience literature. Moreover, performing the founder’s work provided a meaningful experience in collaboration, creative expression, and performance.

Finally, the AUS library will archive scripts, behind-the-scenes materials, and visual documentation. In addition, this archive will help future students learn from the adaptation.
