Donald Trump has ridiculed media portrayals suggesting Elon Musk holds real power in the White House. He asserts that attempts to create division have failed.
“They do it all the time,” Trump stated in excerpts from a Fox News interview set to air on Tuesday.
Mimicking a news anchor, Trump quipped, “Breaking news: Donald Trump has ceded control of the presidency to Elon Musk. President Musk will attend a cabinet meeting tonight.”
The Republican leader, known for resisting competition, has faced speculation about Musk’s rising influence. Some believe it could challenge his authority.
Despite officially heading the newly formed “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), Musk has exercised significant control. He has eliminated waste, swiftly cut jobs, and reduced spending.
Meanwhile, the billionaire’s actions have attracted media satire. A Time magazine cover depicts him at the Resolute Desk. Additionally, a New Yorker illustration shows Musk and Trump taking the presidential oath together.
However, Trump remains publicly supportive of Musk’s role. He emphasizes its importance in addressing soaring budget deficits.
During the Fox News interview, Trump revealed that Musk contacted him about the media’s portrayal.
“Elon called me,” Trump said. “He told me, ‘They’re trying to drive us apart.’ I agreed completely.”
Furthermore, Trump criticized the media’s alleged strategy. He argued that the public sees through it.
“I used to think they were good at it,” he remarked. “They’re actually bad at it. If they were good, I wouldn’t be president.”
He concluded, “The people are smart. They understand.”
Despite ongoing media scrutiny, Musk continues to dominate headlines. Recently, he arrived casually dressed with his four-year-old son at the Oval Office. He also spoke at length, fueling more discussions.
Meanwhile, Democrats have seized on their sometimes-awkward dynamic. Opinion polls show growing negative perceptions of the Tesla and SpaceX CEO. However, Trump is experiencing some of his highest approval ratings ever.
