Babar Azam Set to Open for Pakistan in Tri-Nation Series

Babar Azam

Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam will take on the role of an opener in the upcoming tri-nation series. The series, scheduled in Pakistan, features South Africa and New Zealand alongside the hosts.

This decision comes after Saim Ayub fractured his ankle during the second Test against South Africa last month. Consequently, the team doctor ruled him out for two to three months. As a result, Saim will miss both the ICC Champions Trophy and the tri-nation series.

To address the vacant opening slot, team management proposed Babar Azam return as an opener — a position he thrives in T20 cricket. With Abdullah Shafique also dropped from the squad, both opening slots became available.

Fakhar Zaman, who is back in the one-day format for the first time since November 2023, will partner Babar.

In a strategic move, selectors recalled Test mainstay Saud Shakeel to strengthen the top order. Pakistan will kick off their tri-nation series campaign against New Zealand on February 8 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

Key Fixtures in Karachi and Beyond

After facing New Zealand, Pakistan will play against South Africa on February 12 at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium. The final is set for February 14 in Karachi.

Following the series, Pakistan’s Champions Trophy campaign begins with a match against New Zealand on February 19 in Karachi. The national side will then face India in Dubai on February 23. Finally, they will travel to Rawalpindi to take on Bangladesh on February 27.

Notably, this Champions Trophy will be Pakistan’s first ICC-hosted tournament since the 1996 World Cup. Fans eagerly anticipate the historic event.
