The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced an additional $100,000 payment for six high-profile foreign players in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL). According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), this amount will come from a special fund, which has now grown to $1 million.
Special Fund for Elite Players
To attract top-tier international talent, the PCB has allocated these payments from a reserve fund. Initially, this fund was set at $500,000 annually, triggered when the central pool’s net broadcast revenue surpassed Rs3 billion. However, the amount has now doubled to $1 million, as last year’s unused funds carried over.
Salary Structure Enhanced
During the PSL draft, the base salary for overseas players was capped at $200,000. However, the PCB supplements this amount for elite recruits. For example, Australian cricketer David Warner signed for $300,000, with the PCB contributing $100,000 from the special fund. This approach ensures fairness while attracting high-caliber players.
Several international stars have joined the 10th edition of the PSL. These include players unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, such as David Warner, Daryl Mitchell, Kane Williamson, Finn Allen, and Matthew Short. Additionally, Sean Abbott, Nahid Rana, Liton Das, Michael Bracewell, Rassie van der Dussen, and Corbin Bosch have also signed on.
PSL Scheduling Overlaps with IPL
For the first time, the PSL and IPL schedules will overlap. The PSL is set to run from April 17 to May 22. Meanwhile, the IPL begins on March 21 and continues until late May. Despite this clash, the PCB has successfully secured elite players, ensuring the PSL remains competitive.
Historical Salary Comparisons
Previously, the highest-paid PSL players were Kieron Pollard at $250,000 and AB de Villiers at $230,000. However, with the introduction of the special fund, the PCB has increased payments to attract even bigger names.
By increasing payments and signing star players, the PCB is elevating the PSL’s global reputation. This strategy not only enhances competition but also attracts a larger audience. Additionally, the special fund highlights the PCB’s commitment to supporting franchises financially.
A Thrilling PSL Season Awaits
With improved salaries, global stars, and an overlap with the IPL, the upcoming PSL season promises excitement. Fans can look forward to thrilling matches featuring some of the biggest names in cricket.
