Donald Trump sworn in as 47th US President

Donald Trump

Donald Trump officially returned to the presidency on Monday, completing a historic political comeback with his inauguration. Sworn in at 12:01 PM ET inside the U.S. Capitol, Trump pledged to lead America into a “golden age.” Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office, while JD Vance was sworn in earlier as Vice President.

Donald Trump Key Priorities on Day One

To kick off his term, Donald Trump signed ten executive orders prioritizing border security and immigration. He announced a national emergency at the southern border and ordered armed troops to secure it. Additionally, the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers was reinstated. Trump also vowed to end birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented parents, though legal challenges are expected.

Trump’s inauguration marked a dramatic return to power after facing impeachment trials, a felony conviction, and assassination attempts. Despite these challenges, he defeated Kamala Harris in the November 2024 election. Notably, Trump became the first president since the 19th century to win a second term after losing re-election.

Federal Policy Changes Announced

The new administration is set to reinstate the federal death penalty, reversing a suspension enacted during Biden’s presidency. Furthermore, all official documents will now reflect gender assigned at birth. In addition, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across federal agencies will be eliminated by executive order.

Although Donald Trump avoided imposing immediate tariffs, federal agencies were directed to assess trade relations with Canada, China, and Mexico. This unexpected decision triggered a global market rally. Meanwhile, Trump’s influence was evident in last week’s Israel-Hamas ceasefire, following his warning of severe consequences if hostages were not released.

A Loyalist Cabinet and Republican Majority

Returning with Republican control of Congress, Trump has appointed a Cabinet filled with loyalists. This approach signals his intention to reshape the federal government and reduce bipartisan decision-making. The inauguration featured Trump signing executive orders on stage, symbolizing his commitment to swift action.

Increased security surrounded the event, given recent political violence, including two assassination attempts on Trump. Despite freezing weather, supporters gathered in large numbers for events, including an indoor parade and three inaugural balls.

With his second term underway, Trump has laid out bold plans for domestic policies, economic reforms, and international relations. This marks the beginning of what he calls America’s “golden age.”
