Sharjah: Kalimat Foundation celebrates World Braille Day

Sharjah

Sharjah-based non-profit Kalimat Foundation marked World Braille Day with events promoting accessibility for blind and visually impaired children. The celebration, organized in partnership with Racks Café at its Aljada branch, focused on inclusion and empowerment through innovative activities.

In an exciting development, Kalimat Foundation introduced Braille-adapted board games. These games feature tactile textures and Braille instructions, enabling visually impaired children to participate equally in recreational activities. This groundbreaking initiative sets a new standard for inclusivity in entertainment spaces.

Introducing a Braille Menu in Sharjah

To further support independence, a Braille menu was made available during the event. This thoughtful addition allowed children to choose their refreshments independently, emphasizing the value of autonomy and confidence.

World Braille Day, observed on January 4 each year, honors Louis Braille’s revolutionary tactile writing system. This system has empowered millions globally, including 39 million blind individuals. However, with over 285 million people facing significant visual impairments worldwide, access to Braille education remains limited.

Amna Al Mazmi, Director of Kalimat Foundation, highlighted the importance of promoting Braille literacy. She stated, “We aspire to create a world where every child can read, learn, and thrive, regardless of abilities. Collaborations like ours with Racks Café encourage others to prioritize accessibility in their spaces.”

Engaging Activities and Storytelling

An interactive reading session led by renowned storyteller Samia Ayesh was among the event’s highlights. Her captivating narratives emphasized inclusion and achievement, delighting both blind and sighted children. Meanwhile, participants enjoyed Braille-adapted board games, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared experiences.

Kalimat Foundation and Racks Café announced plans to expand their collection of accessible games. These future additions aim to cater to more interests and age groups, ensuring greater inclusivity.

Raising Awareness among Sharjah Residents

A dedicated Braille awareness corner featured Braille typewriters, Arabic Braille resources, and hands-on activities like bookmark-making. These efforts introduced participants to Braille literacy while fostering a deeper understanding of inclusion.

Through these thoughtful initiatives, Kalimat Foundation continues to lead the way in creating a more inclusive society for visually impaired individuals.
