The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in India is reportedly introducing new rules for cabin baggage. These regulations aim to simplify air travel, reduce airport congestion, and enhance overall security measures.
Key Changes in Cabin Baggage Rules
Under the proposed changes, passengers would be allowed only one cabin bag onboard. Any additional bags must be checked in before boarding. To streamline operations, this adjustment seeks to address delays caused by excessive hand luggage at security checkpoints.
Airlines such as IndiGo and Air India have already revised their policies to align with these upcoming rules:
Air India:
Economy and premium economy passengers can bring one handbag weighing up to 7 kg. Meanwhile, business and first-class passengers are permitted up to 10 kg. Additionally, bag dimensions must not exceed 55 cm in height, 40 cm in length, and 20 cm in width.
IndiGo Airlines:
Passengers are allowed one cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg and a personal item up to 3 kg. Personal items include small purses or compact laptop bags.
Reasons Behind the Policy Shift
Air travel demand has been steadily rising, especially in India, leading to congestion at airports. As a result, these stricter baggage rules aim to reduce delays, enhance efficiency, and ensure smoother security procedures. By limiting the number of cabin bags, authorities hope to expedite boarding and improve overall passenger experiences.
Passengers who booked tickets before May 4, 2024, are exempt from the updated baggage rules. Current allowances remain higher for these travelers, with limits of 8 kg for economy, 10 kg for premium economy, and 12 kg for business or first class.
Air Travel Growth in India
Air travel in India has seen unprecedented growth recently. In November 2024, domestic airlines carried 1.42 crore passengers, reflecting a 12% increase compared to last year. Furthermore, between January and November 2024, domestic airlines transported 1,464.02 lakh passengers, recording a 5.91% year-on-year growth.
