Former players criticize Virat Kohli over Konstas controversy

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli faced intense criticism from former cricketers after the ICC fined him 20% of his match fee. The Indian batting superstar deliberately bumped shoulders with 19-year-old Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the fourth Test on Thursday.

The incident unfolded after Konstas smashed 60 runs off 65 balls, dominating Indian bowlers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Shortly after, Kohli made forceful contact with the young batter, sparking a heated exchange. However, Australian opener Usman Khawaja and umpire Michael Gough quickly intervened to calm tensions.

ICC Takes Disciplinary Action

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed Kohli’s punishment in a statement. “Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee and awarded one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct,” the ICC announced.

Cricketers condemns Virat Kohli actions

Meanwhile, cricket legends and commentators reacted strongly to Kohli’s actions, with many labeling them unnecessary and unsportsmanlike.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting did not hold back in his criticism. “Virat walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation,” Ponting said on Channel Seven. Furthermore, he added, “The umpires and referee will definitely review this incident.”

Ravi Shastri, India’s former coach, also shared his disappointment. “Virat is a senior player and a former captain. He’ll have his explanations, but this was unnecessary,” Shastri remarked on Fox Sports.

Moreover, he emphasized, “Match referee Andy Pycroft will surely be watching this closely.”

Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan criticized Kohli for losing his temper. “Why would a senior pro with so much experience get rattled by a 19-year-old? Sam Konstas did nothing wrong,” Vaughan said.

Additionally, Vaughan expressed concern about the message this sends to younger players.

Despite the controversy, Konstas remained calm during the post-match press conference. “I was adjusting my gloves when I think he accidentally bumped me. That’s just cricket—there’s always tension,” the teenager said.

The young opener, Australia’s youngest-ever, played down the incident and chose to focus on his performance.

Virat Kohli Faces Growing Backlash

Kohli, considered one of the greatest batters of his generation, now faces growing backlash for his on-field behavior. Many believe his actions undermined the spirit of the game and set a poor example.

Overall, the incident highlights the fierce intensity of the India-Australia rivalry. However, it also raises important questions about sportsmanship in cricket.
