A police case has been lodged against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after BJP MPs accused him of injuring two members. The altercation occurred during a protest outside Parliament on Wednesday, amidst parallel demonstrations by Treasury and Opposition benches.
BJP Accusations Against Rahul Gandhi
BJP MPs Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput reportedly sustained head injuries during the scuffle. According to the BJP, Gandhi allegedly pushed Rajput, who then fell onto Sarangi, causing injuries. Consequently, the FIR includes multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These include causing grievous hurt, criminal force, criminal intimidation, and even attempted murder.
Former Union Minister Anurag Thakur, along with MPs Bansuri Swaraj and Hemang Joshi, officially filed the complaint. Thakur claimed Gandhi assaulted BJP MPs, leading to their hospitalization. “Rahul Gandhi’s actions injured two BJP MPs, who are now receiving medical care,” Thakur stated during a press briefing.
Injured MPs Provide Their Accounts
Pratap Sarangi described the incident in detail, saying, “I was near the stairs when Rahul Gandhi pushed Mukesh Rajput. Rajput fell onto me, and I got hurt.”
In response, Rahul Gandhi dismissed the accusations, calling them attempts to divert attention from Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remarks about BR Ambedkar. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also refuted the claims, alleging that BJP MPs pushed him during the protest, injuring his legs.
Additional Allegations from BJP MP
Adding to the accusations, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak alleged that Gandhi shouted at her during the protest. She described his behavior as “unbecoming” of a Leader of the Opposition. Moreover, she confirmed filing a complaint with the Rajya Sabha chairman, citing his actions as inappropriate.
Initially, the protests outside the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament House were peaceful. However, tensions quickly escalated into physical altercations. Both parties have now filed formal complaints, intensifying the political friction between BJP and Congress.
As investigations continue, the incident underscores the rising tensions and political rivalry in India’s Parliament.
