Man fined Dh10,000 for insulting woman on WhatsApp in Al Ain

WhatsApp

The Al Ain Court of First Instance has ordered a man to pay Dh10,000 in compensation for insulting a woman via WhatsApp.

The court emphasized that his offensive messages caused significant emotional distress. As a result, the woman felt humiliated and suffered severe psychological anxiety. Additionally, the defendant must cover all related legal costs and court fees.

Details of the Case

According to court documents, the woman filed a lawsuit claiming the man sent her insulting messages on WhatsApp. Consequently, this led to defamation charges. Earlier, the criminal court convicted the defendant, ruling that his behavior harmed the woman’s emotional well-being.

In her civil case, the woman demanded Dh51,000 as compensation for material and moral damages. However, the defendant’s lawyer argued that she provoked the situation by initiating the conflict. He further claimed that her insults and curses on WhatsApp triggered his response.

Court’s Final Ruling in WhatsApp case

Despite the defense’s argument, the court ruled against the man. Notably, the judge pointed to the defendant’s earlier criminal conviction, which was final and binding. Moreover, the court highlighted how his actions caused severe emotional harm. The insults deeply affected the woman’s dignity and reputation.

After careful consideration, the court decided Dh10,000 was sufficient to compensate for the emotional distress. The judge stated that this amount appropriately addresses the non-material damages suffered.

Legal Implications for WhatsApp

This ruling highlights the UAE’s firm stance on cybercrime and digital harassment laws. Sending offensive messages through platforms like WhatsApp can lead to criminal convictions and hefty fines.

Furthermore, this case serves as a strong reminder for individuals to use messaging apps responsibly. Any inappropriate or harmful behavior online can result in serious legal consequences.

With this final judgment, the defendant must now pay the compensation and cover all associated legal fees. This decision reinforces the importance of respectful communication in the digital age.
