Sharjah Ruler attends launch of Desert Theatre Festival

Sharjah

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the 8th Desert Theatre Festival in Al Khohaif, Sharjah, on Friday. The festival, which celebrates Arabian desert culture and theatrical arts, will run until December 17.

Notably, the event also welcomed His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. Furthermore, Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi and other senior officials joined the gathering. Several renowned artists and cultural figures were also in attendance, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Upon his arrival, Sheikh Dr. Sultan experienced a performance of his theatrical work, The Robe Dyed in Blood. The play, presented in three acts, vividly portrays the life of Arab poet Bashir bin ‘Awana. It explores themes of courage, eloquence, and the poet’s emotional journey as he sought to marry his cousin Fatima. Additionally, the performance incorporated storytelling, poetry, and traditional Arab art, offering a rich cultural experience.

The festival features diverse performances from across the Arab world. On December 9, Tunisia will present Palace of Dust by the “Fann Ad-Dafateen” group. Following that, Jordan will stage Al-Deera by the Raff Performance Arts Group on December 10. On December 11, Egypt will showcase Al-Zeina, presented by Studio 77. Finally, Mauritania will conclude with Al-Hakeem by the Eihaa Performing Arts Group on December 12. Importantly, each performance will include post-show discussions, providing critical analysis and fresh insights.

Moreover, a cultural programme will run parallel to the theatrical performances. Scheduled for December 14 and 15, the discussions will explore the theme Desert Theatre: Experience and Awareness. These sessions aim to highlight the festival’s impact on Arab theatre, both practically and theoretically.

Overall, the Desert Theatre Festival continues to emphasize the richness of Arab heritage. By fostering cultural exchange and artistic innovation, it brings together traditions, modernity, and diverse perspectives.
