The United Arab Emirates has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s recent seizure of the buffer zone in the Golan Heights in Syria.
In a statement, the UAE emphasized that the action represents a direct violation of international law and undermines efforts for peace and stability in the region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) underscored that Israel’s actions threaten to escalate tensions in an already volatile area.
Unwavering Support for Sovereign Syria
The UAE reaffirmed its unwavering support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Syrian state. The MoFA pointed out that Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights is in clear contravention of international agreements, particularly the 1974 “Agreement of Disengagement” between Israel and Syria.
This agreement, brokered by the United Nations, established a demilitarized zone and a buffer between the two countries to prevent further hostilities after the 1967 Six-Day War. Israel’s actions violate both the spirit and the letter of this agreement, the UAE stated.
The UAE’s condemnation highlights the broader implications of Israel’s actions for regional stability. In its statement, the MoFA emphasized that such unilateral moves would only serve to further inflame tensions, not only between Israel and Syria but also across the entire Middle East.
The UAE expressed concern that these developments could disrupt ongoing peace efforts and hinder dialogue aimed at achieving a lasting and comprehensive resolution to the region’s conflicts.
UN resolution in Syria
Moreover, the UAE stressed the importance of adhering to international law and upholding United Nations resolutions to ensure lasting peace and stability. The UAE called for an immediate cessation of actions that escalate the situation and endanger the prospects for peaceful negotiations.
The UAE reiterated its commitment to supporting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial rights. It also called on the international community to take a firm stance against actions that undermine regional peace and security.
The statement concluded with a call for all parties to work towards de-escalation and engage in dialogue to preserve stability in the region.
