UAE Climbs to 5th in Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development Index

The UAE has achieved a remarkable milestone, ranking fifth in the Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development (QI4SD) Index 2024. This notable rise, up six places since the index’s launch by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in June 2022, reflects the country’s strong focus on sustainable development.

 

The QI4SD Index assesses how national quality infrastructure systems contribute to achieving sustainable development goals. The UAE, grouped with countries having GDPs between $100 billion and $1 trillion, shares this category with Switzerland, South Africa, Singapore, and Finland.

 

Advancing Through Leadership and Strategy

 

The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) has played a vital role in driving advancements in quality infrastructure. These include improving standards, regulations, conformity assessments, accreditation, and market surveillance systems. To sustain this progress, the UAE established the National Committee for Quality Infrastructure, ensuring oversight and strategic direction for related initiatives.

 

Strengthening Global Competitiveness in UAE

 

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, highlighted the UAE’s vision to enhance sustainable supply chains and diversify the economy. He stated, “This achievement underscores the UAE’s alignment with global standards, improving efficiency and competitiveness in the industrial sector.”

 

Supporting Industry Growth

 

Omar Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of MoIAT, emphasized that the National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology fosters industrial growth and sustainability. He explained, “We aim to strengthen supply chains, enhance national self-sufficiency, and empower industries to meet quality and sustainability standards.”

 

UAE Celebrating Global Achievements in 2024

 

Dr. Farah Al Zarooni, Assistant Undersecretary for Standards and Regulations at MoIAT, noted the UAE’s global successes this year. These include leading the Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries (SMIIC) for 2025-2027. Meanwhile securing key memberships in international standardization bodies like the ISO Council.

 

Driving Sustainability and Innovation

 

The UAE has implemented over 27,000 standards and regulations, significantly boosting local industries and facilitating international trade. This year’s ranking highlights the country’s dedication to fostering innovation, attracting investments, and promoting trade opportunities.

 

Abdulla Al Yazeedi, Acting Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, noted, “The UAE’s top ranking in the MENA region and fifth globally reflects its commitment to sustainable development and global competitiveness.”

 

This achievement reinforces the UAE’s leadership in quality infrastructure, contributing significantly to its economy and international standing.
