Rebels in Syria announced the removal of President Bashar al-Assad after seizing Damascus on Sunday. This historic victory ends his family’s 13-year rule and signals a seismic shift in Middle Eastern politics.
The rebels’ triumph also weakens the influence of Russia and Iran, Assad’s key allies during the protracted civil war. Their diminished role reshapes the region, already grappling with the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Rebels Secure Damascus, Assad’s Whereabouts Unclear
After taking Damascus, rebels reported no resistance from Assad’s forces. Two senior officers confirmed Assad fled the capital earlier.
Adding to the speculation, a Syrian Air flight departed Damascus and mysteriously vanished from radar. Initially heading to the Alawite coastal stronghold, the plane abruptly changed course before disappearing. Reports suggest Assad may have been aboard, though this remains unverified.
Celebrating their victory, rebels declared, “We announce the end of tyranny and the liberation of thousands from Sednaya prison.”
Transition Brings Challenges and Regional Concerns
The rapid turn of events shocked Arab capitals and raised fears of further instability. Syria, ravaged by years of war, now faces immense challenges.
Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali called for free elections, emphasizing the importance of letting Syrians decide their future. However, stabilizing western Syria and managing the transition remain significant hurdles.
The involvement of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) complicates matters. HTS, formerly linked to al-Qaeda, played a crucial role in the rebels’ victory. While influential, the group’s Islamist roots concern regional powers like the UAE and Egypt.
Discussions Begin on Transitional Governance
In a notable development, Jalali revealed talks with HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani to discuss the transitional period. This effort could shape Syria’s political future.
Despite this progress, competing interests among various factions may delay stability. Western governments must decide how to interact with a new administration that includes HTS.
Regional leaders, such as the UAE’s Anwar Gargash, emphasized their focus on combating extremism and terrorism during this period of uncertainty.
A New Chapter for Syria
The collapse of Assad’s regime marks a pivotal moment in Syria’s history. As Syrians celebrate, the global community watches closely to see if this shift will bring stability or further challenges.
