Champions Trophy: PCB, ICC agree on hybrid model

Champions Trophy

The long-standing debate over the 2025 Champions Trophy hosting has taken a significant turn. Reportedly, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have reached a tentative agreement. This hybrid model would ensure games between India and Pakistan during ICC tournaments take place at neutral venues.

Key Details of the Agreement

Although sources revealed the agreement to ESPNcricinfo, the PCB has not officially confirmed it. Instead, they stated that discussions are ongoing.

The hybrid model may extend to both men’s and women’s ICC events during the 2024–2027 commercial cycle. Notable tournaments in this period include:

– The Champions Trophy, scheduled for February 2025 in Pakistan.

– The Women’s ODI World Cup, set to be hosted by India in late 2025.

– The Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026.

This agreement reportedly stemmed from meetings in Dubai between ICC Chair Jay Shah and PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi. These discussions coincided with Shah’s visit to ICC headquarters in his new role. The ICC Board is expected to finalize decisions during its December 7 meeting.

Conditions for Champions Trophy Hybrid Model

The PCB has set specific conditions for agreeing to the hybrid model. One primary condition is ensuring the model applies to all ICC events hosted in India and Pakistan through 2027. Additionally, they seek compensation for potential revenue losses if India’s matches are moved to neutral venues.

If India advances to the knockout rounds of the Champions Trophy, critical games, including a semifinal or the final, may also relocate outside Pakistan. Likely neutral venues include the UAE and Sri Lanka.

To address financial concerns, the PCB proposed a tri-nation series featuring India, Pakistan, and another nation. This initiative aims to offset monetary losses incurred by either board.

Hosting Champions Trophy and Scheduling Challenges

The PCB had initially planned to host the Champions Trophy in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi starting February 19, 2025. However, the hybrid model discussions have delayed the ICC’s release of the official schedule.

The BCCI has already informed the ICC that sending India’s team to Pakistan requires government clearance, further complicating planning.

New Leadership Brings New Perspectives

Jay Shah, the youngest ICC Chair at 36, has promised a “new era” for cricket. Shah, who recently completed his term as BCCI Secretary, aims to elevate the sport globally.

Negotiations are still underway, and a final decision is anticipated during the ICC Board meeting on December 7. If adopted, the hybrid model could redefine international cricket tournaments for the region.
