Sharjah is advancing its traffic management by installing smart cameras to catch drivers violating lane rules. These cameras will start operating this weekend under the Al Budaiya Bridge, at the exit toward Dubai. This effort aims to enhance traffic flow and law enforcement.
Colonel Mohammad Alay Al Naqbi, Director of Sharjah Police’s Traffic and Patrols Department, shared details with Gulf News. He explained that the initiative follows directives from Major General Abdullah Mubarak, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, to use modern technology for better traffic control.
Boosting Efficiency and Traffic Flow
Colonel Al Naqbi said these cameras will let traffic patrols focus on other critical areas. “This initiative tackles issues like improper lane changes. By installing cameras under the Al Budaiya Bridge, we aim to resolve complaints and ensure smooth traffic for commuters traveling from Al Suyoh to Sheikh Khalifa Street,” he noted.
This project highlights Sharjah’s dedication to improving traffic management through innovative technology. The move aligns with broader efforts to integrate advanced solutions for urban challenges, ensuring roads are safer for all users. By addressing lane violations systematically, Sharjah sets a precedent for other cities in the UAE.
Heavy Traffic Congestion on Sharjah roads
The smart cameras respond to significant morning traffic on Emirates Road. Improper lane changes often cause congestion for drivers heading toward Sheikh Khalifa Street. While police patrols monitor this area daily, cameras will ensure constant enforcement.
“Patrols are often diverted to handle other incidents. These cameras will provide continuous oversight, ensuring efficient traffic management,” Colonel Al Naqbi added. Traffic congestion has been a recurring issue, particularly during peak hours. Many motorists have voiced concerns over delays caused by careless drivers switching lanes improperly. The new cameras aim to tackle these problems head-on.
The authorities are also considering expanding the use of smart cameras to other busy areas in Sharjah. This expansion would further strengthen the city’s capability to handle traffic violations effectively. The initiative is seen as a step forward in creating a culture of compliance and responsibility among drivers.
Fines for Lane Violations
According to Article 86 of the Federal Traffic Law, failing to stay in the designated lane incurs a Dh400 fine. Drivers must follow lane rules in high-traffic areas to prevent accidents and ease congestion.
Sharjah Police have also launched awareness campaigns to educate drivers about the importance of lane discipline. These efforts complement the deployment of smart cameras, fostering a safer driving environment. Ensuring that drivers adhere to rules is vital for reducing accidents and enhancing overall road safety.
With this advanced technology, Sharjah is taking significant steps to improve road safety and ensure smoother traffic for commuters. The use of smart cameras marks a milestone in the city’s journey toward smarter and more efficient urban planning.
