UAE launches nationwide campaign to combat food waste

The UAE has unveiled a major public awareness campaign to address the growing issue of food waste, placing businesses and households at the forefront of the initiative. The campaign, Valuing Our Roots, represents a significant step toward fostering a sustainable future through mindful food production and consumption.

Led by Ne’ma, the UAE’s national food loss and waste initiative, and supported by ADQ and Tadweer, the campaign aims to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. Currently, the UAE wastes approximately Dh6 billion ($1.63 billion) worth of food annually, according to Ne’ma estimates.

“This initiative is a strategic leap toward reshaping societal behaviors,” said Mariam Al Mheiri, chairwoman of Ne’ma Steering Committee. She emphasized the importance of preserving food in line with cultural traditions. Ne’ma seeks to reawaken responsibility around food preservation while promoting sustainability across communities.

Promoting Awareness against food waste

Khuloud Al Nuwais, secretary general of the Ne’ma steering committee, stressed the importance of valuing food across the Emirates. “We aim to foster a culture where food is preserved, shared, and consumed responsibly,” she said.

An exhibition in Abu Dhabi highlighted the efforts of home-grown companies championing sustainable practices, encouraging others to follow their example in combating waste.

Replate: A Global Initiative with Local Impact

Replate, a global social enterprise, showcased its efforts to rescue surplus food from hotels and deliver it to those in need. The organization has recovered 3.9 million pounds of food and served 3.2 million meals globally since 2016. In the UAE, Replate has delivered over 175,000 meals, partnering with hotels, malls, and other businesses to reduce food waste and organize zero-waste events.

“By rescuing excess food, we ensure it nourishes people rather than ending up in landfills,” said a Replate representative. The organization’s mission aligns perfectly with the UAE’s goals of sustainability and mindful food practices.

Gourmet Solutions to Reduce Food Waste

Pure Soil Family Farm, founded by Bodour Al Tamimi, is another shining example of sustainability. Ms. Al Tamimi advocates for natural, waste-free food production and consumption. She creates coffee from date pits and milk from nuts while ensuring her products are free from harmful additives.

“Everything I make is pure and natural. If it isn’t good for my children, I won’t sell it,” said Ms. Al Tamimi. Her commitment to reducing food waste and promoting healthy living resonates with the campaign’s goals.

A Call to Action

The campaign encourages individuals and organizations to adopt more sustainable practices and value food at every stage. By addressing food waste through education, innovation, and community engagement, the UAE continues to set an example of environmental stewardship.

With food waste at the center of this movement, the UAE is making strides toward a sustainable future where food is treated as a precious resource.
