In a groundbreaking decision, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has revealed the schedules for the next three seasons. The 2024 IPL season will start on March 14 and conclude with the final on May 25. The 2026 season will run from March 15 to May 31, while the 2027 edition is set for March 14 to May 30.
This announcement marks the first time the IPL has released multiple season schedules in advance. According to an email sent to franchises, these timelines are termed “windows,” but they are expected to be finalized soon.
IPL Match Structure and Updates
The 2025 IPL season will feature 74 matches, following the same format as the past three seasons. However, this is fewer than the 84 matches originally projected by IPL authorities during the 2023-27 media rights cycle. For 2026 and 2027, the number of games may increase to 84 and possibly 94, in line with earlier projections.
Overseas Player Participation
The IPL has secured clearance from several cricket boards to allow international players to participate in the next three seasons. Notably, players from all major Test-playing nations, except Pakistan, will feature in the league.
Australia: Cricket Australia has approved player participation, with minor scheduling conflicts in 2026 and 2027. Players involved in bilateral series or celebratory matches will join IPL teams after their commitments.
England: The England and Wales Cricket Board has listed 18 centrally contracted players for the IPL, excluding Ben Stokes. Players without central contracts will be fully available for the upcoming seasons.
Other Countries: Players from South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe will be fully available for the IPL. Sri Lanka has also committed its players for the 2025 season, with conditional availability for 2026 and 2027.
Bangladesh: The Bangladesh Cricket Board has listed 13 players who will be available for varying durations, including Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman.
