President-elect Donald Trump has announced the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), appointing Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy as its leaders. This move highlights Trump’s commitment to streamlining government operations and reducing unnecessary spending.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Donald Trump praised Musk and Ramaswamy as key figures who will “dismantle government bureaucracy, reduce excessive regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.” The new department will act as an advisory body operating outside traditional government structures, collaborating with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget to promote significant structural reform and introduce an innovative, entrepreneurial mindset to federal operations.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and owner of the social media platform X, has long been a prominent supporter of Trump. Forbes recently ranked Musk as the world’s richest person. His influence is expected to bolster initiatives that may benefit his enterprises and reshape how government interacts with the private sector. Musk has been vocal about government inefficiencies and expressed enthusiasm for the role. “This will send shockwaves through the system,” he remarked in Trump’s statement, adding that it could be the “Manhattan Project” of modern governance reform.
Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate, previously competed against Trump in the 2024 primaries before endorsing him. Ramaswamy shared his excitement on X, saying, “We will not go gently, @elonmusk.”
Musk amplified Trump’s announcement on his own X account, adding, “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!” He also hinted at the public’s potential underestimation of the department’s impact, posting, “People have no idea how much this will move the needle!”
The department’s acronym, DOGE, coincidentally aligns with Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency Musk has frequently promoted.
Donald Trump outlined that the department’s primary initiatives should be completed by July 4, 2026, positioning this achievement as a significant milestone in time for America’s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This timeline underscores the administration’s ambition to deliver tangible results, branding it as a patriotic “gift” to the nation.
