Sharjah has launched a new initiative with the formation of the Energy Council, announced through an Emiri Decree by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The Council aims to develop strategic plans for the future of energy and water management while boosting economic growth through diversified energy sources.
The Council will operate independently, with both financial and administrative autonomy, ensuring flexibility in achieving its objectives. Its headquarters will be based in Sharjah, with Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, serving as the chairman. Other members include Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Petroleum Council, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Chairman of the Petroleum Council. Key officials such as Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, head of SEWA, and Waleed Ibrahim Al Sayegh, Director-General of the Central Finance Department, are also part of the leadership.
The Council’s objectives align with Sharjah’s broader goals to strengthen the energy sector, ensure sustainability, and streamline governance. It will promote efficient energy use, secure energy supplies, and foster collaboration among stakeholders. Special focus will be placed on expanding the use of renewable energy, optimizing electricity demand, and supporting sustainable projects such as solar-powered agriculture.
The Council’s mandate covers various areas including the exploration and distribution of natural gas, oil production, electricity generation, and water management. Additional responsibilities include managing central cooling services, implementing energy storage solutions, and ensuring the smooth operation of gas and electricity networks.
By establishing this Council, Sharjah aims to enhance its energy security while promoting sustainable development, supporting economic growth, and ensuring environmental responsibility across the emirate.
