Meta has announced a significant update to WhatsApp, introducing a complete overhaul of how contacts are managed within the app.
New contact manager
WhatsApp will now store contacts directly in the app, eliminating the need to rely on the phone’s contact list. This means users won’t have to save contacts again if their phone is lost or damaged.
Issues with multiple accounts addressed
The new system will also benefit users who run two WhatsApp accounts on the same device, solving the problems they previously faced.
Identity proof linked storage (IPLS) technology
According to WhatsApp, contacts saved through the new feature will be encrypted, ensuring that only the user can access them.
Username feature coming soon
In the near future, users will be able to save contacts with usernames, allowing them to chat without sharing their phone numbers.
Release timeline
The new contact manager will first roll out to WhatsApp Web and the Windows app in the coming weeks, followed by other linked devices.
With these new features, WhatsApp is making it easier and more secure to manage contacts.
