Who is Afghan national arrested in US over Election Day attack plot?

Authorities in the United States have arrested an Afghan national accused of plotting a terror attack on Election Day. The suspect was apprehended after federal agencies intercepted communications suggesting plans to target a key location during the upcoming U.S. elections in November 2024.

Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, of Oklahoma City told investigators after his arrest Monday that he had planned his attack to coincide with Election Day next month and that he and a co-conspirator expected to die as martyrs, according to charging documents.

Tawhedi, who arrived in the U.S. in 2021, had taken steps in recent weeks to advance his attack plans, including by ordering AK-47 rifles, liquidating his family’s assets and buying one-way tickets for his wife and child to travel home to Afghanistan.

Federal officials have not yet disclosed specific details about the planned attack, including the target or method, but they confirmed the suspect was attempting to procure weapons and materials needed to carry out the operation. The Department of Justice is currently preparing charges against the Afghan national, which are expected to include terrorism-related offenses.

The arrest has raised concerns over election security, with federal authorities emphasizing that they are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of voters and the integrity of the election process. Security measures are being heightened in key locations, particularly in battleground states where the suspect may have intended to strike.

This case is still under investigation, and more details are expected to emerge as officials work to determine if the suspect had any accomplices or connections to terrorist groups abroad.
