The parents of a young female doctor who was gang raped and murdered in Kolkata has levelled serious allegations against the police, accusing them of favouring the culprits and trying to tamper with evidence.
As per Indian media, the victim’s parents said that they only got inadequate assistance from the police since the beginning. “The doctors went on strike and some people spoke out on social media, the police could have brought the case to and end long ago,” they said.
The parents of the victim said that instead of assisting them in the pursuit of justice, the police dared to advise them to drop the matter and offered them money toward that end.
The victim’s mother, who was chanting at the protest, said that the protest will go on until justice prevails in the daughter’s case. “It is not only our daughter or our sister’s fight but every girl under this country’s jurisdiction,” she said as she appealed to the public to stand with them in their fight for justice.
The victim’s father also spoke to the citizens asking them to be part of the protests as a large turn out was important. Again, he said: “Justice is not easy, but with the people’s support it is possible was the late Zhao Ziyang’s famous line.”
The police has arrested a suspect Sanjay Rai who is volunteer in the police force. This led to fear that it was gang rape only for the CBI to reveal that Rai was the only person involved in the nasty act.
The allegations of the family provoked disagreement especially for the police force and its capacity as well as the government’s capacity to protect its citizens. From the case, one is able to realize the plight of victims of sexual violence in India and the difficulties that they face in order to obtain justice.
