Indian music producer and rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh has disclosed his journey of learning about Islam, highlighting the profound influence of Sufi saints and religious scholars.
Singh, in an interview with a journalist from India just a few days ago, talked about his life back in 2007 when he shifted base to Mohali, Punjab, a time when he hadn’t seen fame. Back then Singh was an unknown musical producer.
While in Mohali, he met with many spiritual leaders and they taught him the basics of Islam. Singh shared, “After moving to Mohali, I was introduced to Islam by these religious scholars. My initial curiosity soon turned into fascination as I found myself with a million questions about the religion.
The singer elaborated on the knowledge he acquired from these figures, mentioning, “I learned about significant Islamic figures including Hazrat Musa, Hazrat Isa (Peace Be Upon Them), and Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). My learning included understanding the role of Hazrat Isa as described in the Holy Quran.”
Singh emphasised his attentive listening to the scholars and his persistent inquiries about Islamic teachings. “I frequently asked questions like ‘Why is this so?’ and ‘How did this happen?’ and the scholars were always patient in answering my queries.
Reflecting on his journey, the famous Indian rapper admitted that his life took a downturn after gaining fame and wealth post-2012. He confessed, “Instead of showing gratitude, I succumbed to negative influences, which I now recognize as my biggest mistake.”
His life, his health, his career, all suffered the consequences of his poor decisions. But Singh came back in 2018 and now claims to be born again. But I have refocused my faith in God” he said.
